Random Question

Since it's come up in a comments thread that many, MANY of us have songs on our iPod that make us laugh, or songs that work for our brains in odd ways, or otherwise we are attached to -- but songs that are a wee bit embarrassing to admit to. Okay. Maybe even a lot embarrassing to admit to...

What's the funniest/oddest/most embarrassing thing on YOUR iPod or mp3 player, or otherwise in your music collection?

I seriously have a lot of really cred-detracting stuff in my collection, but I think probably one of the hands down worst things, which I listen to a fair amount, is the off-brand version of Beyonce and Jay-Z's "Crazy in Love". It came from a Best Songs of the Year CD that we got in a dollar store, the kind where it's actually random non-famous people singing "in the style of" actual famous people. The fake Jay-Z gets a bit confused about part of his rap segment in it, and I actually really enjoy his substitute lyrics.

In the real version, Jay-Z says, "Yes sir, I'm cut from a different cloth. My texture is the best fur. I'm chinchilla."

In my version, the fake Jay-Z says, "Yes sir, I'm cut from a different cloth. My texture... chinchilla under cloth!"

This makes me smile every single time.

I have some old school Christian Rock. I don't have any Petra left, but I still have DC Talk and the Newsboys.

Funniest? Tough call. There's a fair bit of stuff that's funny on purpose -- Divine Comedy, Voltaire, Magnetic Fields -- but I think for unintentionally hilarious nothing beats the track 'Texas' by Finnish joik artist, Wimme. And while hilarious, it's also deeply infectious.

Oddest -- the entire album The Sporting Life by Diamanda Galás and John Paul Jones.

Most embarrassing -- oh dear. Either Toto's soundtrack to Dune or Milla Jovovich's album, The Divine Comedy. I squirm the most over the ownership of either based on some modulo of the air pressure and the exact likelihood of all the oxygen molecules migrating to the other side of the room.

Funniest: Colorectal Surgeon, by Bowser & Blue.

Most embarrassing: Berlin, maybe? Oh! I've got MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice off this Back 2 Back Hits CD.

Oddest: I've got a huge collection of western swing from this blog that records mp3s off of old 78 records. It's basically like having KMRE-LP on my own computer. I'm also in love with Tuvan throat singing, and have a lot of Yat-Kha, who does covers of stuff like Joy Division.

i own a purely ridiculous amount of music, some of it which i rediscover at points with "....dear GOD what was i thinking?" and others that get deleted the minute i finish the scene its attached to, but right now the thing i'm cringing at hardest is the copy of anne murray's "you needed me" right smack in the middle of this playlist, which is otherwise full of nine inch nails, VAST, system of a down, marilyn manson, garbage, the mars volta, janelle monae, the seatbelts, vienna teng, and robert johnson. i don't even. this plist is just crazy. *throws hands up*

(actually i think i have some new edition AND sir mix a lot on here too.)

Um. Gina G, Man2man meets Man Parrish, Army of Lovers, Tiffany, Elakelaiset...

Although I'm not embarrassed by the pounding gay disco and Hummpa.

There must be something odder, but the first thing to come to mind is Korean pop music since I've been listening to it a lot lately.

I suppose the Elvis songs in Latin are odd.

Is it embarrassing to fill your ipod with the soundtracks from LOTR, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Harry Potter?

It's kind of a tossup between brain-breaking covers (the power-ballad version of "Wuthering Heights", the surf rock cover of "My Heart Will Go On" to which I can't stop listening), the bubblegum pop (I think I have Owl City somewhere in my iTunes) , and the music that outs me as a total nerd (the Left 4 Dead "Francis Hates Everything" dance mix). I suspect I'm more embarrassed by the bubblegum pop than anything else.

It helps that when I'm working I don't notice the music. Of course, this means it's dangerous to be around me when I'm working. You never know when The Ice Factory's "P.U.S.S.Y." will start up.

I have decided that Owl City is subversive in his cheery pop, and therefore I don't have to apologize for being infected...YMMV.

I have a Pandora.com dance music station to pump me up, or to write stuff that deserves that kind of thing, and I like the music I have on it for *what it is*.
Except Basshunter.

Basshunter I really DO love.
It may be the geek-appeal of his cartoony catch-lines, or something, but really.

I am never embarrassed by the music I like. What for, man? Someone doesn't like it, listen to something else, don't be judging me, etc.

But odd, well...there's a couple of songs on the Wizard Women of the North collection that involves a lot of shrieking and howling. Sounds like something unearthly being a blood sacrifice. I find it really unpleasant and never listen to those tracks.
